Our five-bar tread aluminum sheets are pressed aluminum sheets bearing a raised pattern on one side. Here at SizeMetal, our sheets are top quality and even our modern-looking raised five-bar tread pattern gives you a striking look. A great benefit of five-bar tread aluminum sheets is that it is weather and corrosion-proof, easy to clean, and skid-resistant. This makes them suitable for a wide variety of applications for both indoors and outdoors.
This material is typically used for both industrial and domestic purposes due to its high strength, low cost, malleability, and machinability. It is commonly used as a form of safe, resilient flooring and can also be used as a light construction material.
On top of being durable and non-slip, many use five-bar tread aluminum sheets for cosmetic applications due to its attractive appearance and shiny finish. Many companies use it for flooring or wainscoting to add some contrast or even highlight parts of the space. One of our personal favorite applications for five-bar tread aluminum sheets is using it as flooring for trailers.
Properties
Five-bar tread aluminum sheets has been specially formulated and manufactured to create an attractive, yet robust material suitable for a wide variety of applications. The raised five-bar tread pattern is formed by hot-rolling the aluminum. Diamond plates can be polished to a highly reflective finish for applications that require a beautiful surface as well as a tough exterior.
Our sheets are made from Aluminum 3003, which consists of aluminum alloyed with 1.2 percent manganese and traces of several other materials. This provides superior strength over pure aluminum, creating a more durable product that can still be cut and shaped effectively. The metal is strain-hardened and partially annealed (a form of treatment the improves malleability). The sheets gain their strength from cold-working alone and cannot be heat treated.
The result is that our five-bar tread aluminum sheets have good innate corrosion-resistance and moderate strength for their thickness. As well as being robust and lightweight, Aluminum 3003 is moisture and weather-resistant. The raised tread pattern provides a high degree of slip-resistance despite the smooth, mirror finish which gives the product a reflective surface and unique decorative appearance.
Aluminum 3003 has a wide range of applications in chemical equipment, sheet metal work, cooking utensils, pressure vessels, garage doors, awning slats, storage and gasoline tanks, and a variety of drawn and spun components. In sheet form, a relatively low thickness nevertheless provides a high degree of rigidity, whilst remaining formable under the right circumstances.
Aluminum 3003’s excellent machinability means it can easily be cut, shaped, and finished, while remaining a durable and versatile material. It is straightforward to weld, drill, saw, shear and form, with little wear on tools. Diamond sheets can be cut down to the required size and shape with minimal effort. This makes it popular as a flooring material, particularly where safety is an issue or where surfaces need to be resistant to dirt and moisture and easy to clean. Need your aluminum diamond plate custom cut? We can do that! Contact us or call us at 800-935-1973.
Application
It’s five-bar tread texture gives excellent anti-skid properties, and it is often used in industrial settings for stairways, catwalks, ramps, and walkways where wet conditions may otherwise pose a risk of sliding or falling. These non-slip properties also make it a common solution for ambulance floors and for the footplates of firetrucks, as well as domestic truck beds and trailer floors.
Five-bar tread aluminum sheets can also be used for wall panels, counter tops, tiling for other surfaces, and various architectural uses. Since it is easy to machine along with being robust and attractive, diamond plate tool boxes are another popular application. It is frequently employed to finish edges and corners of items made of other materials, where an extra element of wear-resistance is required. When fitting diamond plate in sheets or angles, care should be taken to select the right materials for fixing. Zinc-plated screws can be used, but aluminum rivets or other fixings may contribute to corrosion due to the differing electrolytic properties of the metals. If in doubt, seek advice and be sure to match materials appropriately to avoid long-term problems.
Maintenance
The corrosion-resistant properties and weather-proof nature of the aluminum alloy used, means that maintaining the appearance and bright finish should be a simple. Maintenance is usually a case of brushing and wiping clean, though in many instances this will not be necessary at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Depending on your application, here are some guidelines for what each thickness of diamond plate is good for. For flooring applications, it all depends on the base you put down before. The general idea is that the thicker the support, the thinner you can go.
0.025” Thickness
0.025” thickness aluminum diamond plate is a very unique material in comparison to the rest of the diamond plates. It’s thin, flexible, lightweight, easy to cut, easy to bend around corners, and provides a bright, low maintenance surface for walls or ceilings. The most important property is that it can be rolled-up and shipped in a box! We do not recommend using 0.025” for flooring as it is embossed.
It’s great for :
- Cosmetic/decorative purposes
- Covering walls
- Backsplashes
- Fitness room or gym
- Wainscoting
- Garages
- Shelves or shelf front covering
- Displays
- Stone guard for horse/animal trailers
- Low impact areas
- Trailer trims
- Art project
- Protecting wall corners and pillars
- Door guards and kick guards
- Wall border baseboard
- Ceilings
- Trucks trims
0.045”, 0.063”, 0.080” Thickness
0.045” thickness aluminum diamond plate is one step up from our 0.025” and can be used for the same applications and even flooring. Generally 0.045”, 0.063”, and 0.080” are all very similar for application use. They are all typically used for covering walls and lightly used floors. Picking the right thickness will depend on your budget and what will be placed on top of it. For flooring we recommend having a strong base (ideally 3/4″ of plywood or whatever material you’re using).
0.100” Thickness
0.100” thickness is great for covering walls and floors. It’s thick enough to take a lot of wear and tear. Choosing this thickness or above is better for covering floors that experience regular wear.
It’s great for :
- Protecting walls from heavy wear and tear
- Flooring
- Fitness rooms/gyms
- Garages
- Trailers
- Trucks
0.125” Thickness
0.125” thickness diamond plate is thick and strong and it’s mostly used for the flooring for trucks and trailers. We have even seen businesses use 0.125” for walls that take a lot of abuse. This is harder to shape but can still be cut to order and machined using the right tools.
Aluminum is light, soft, and remarkable for its ability to resist corrosion. Most of our aluminum diamond plates are made with 3003 aluminum alloys strengthened with Manganese.
Hot-rolled diamond plate materials are generally better than cold-rolled diamond plate because hot-rolled materials have a uniform microstructure with less defects and cracks.
Cold-rolled material have lots of micro-defects and cracks, resulting in the tendency to crack when bending. All of our products are hot-rolled for maximum product quality.
For the 0.025” aluminum diamond plate, you can either use heavy duty scissors, tin snips, or a wood saw.
For the rest of the thicknesses (0.045” 0.063”,0.080”, 0.100”, 0.125”), generally a wood saw or metal saw will work fine with cutting.
You can easily drill through these aluminum diamond plates with regular drills.
For walls, make sure that the surface that you want to adhere the diamond plate to is completely clean and dry. For 0.025” you can apply construction adhesive to the back of the material. For all other thicknesses, many people like to apply construction adhesive and then screw in the corners/edges of the sheets.
For flooring, it will depend on what material you are attaching the diamond plate to. For general use make sure that you drill even holes in the diamond plate edge if the sheet is thick or if you’re planning on drilling into metal. They should be about a 1/2” from the edge itself. A good distance apart is about every 10”-12”. You can adjust this depending on the size or shape of the floor plate.
